It is because live performances are not easy to stage flawlessly the way pre-taped episodes of quality shows are now. I did enjoy this version of Rebecca, I have read the book and I do think that this is a little more close to how the book was closer than Alfred Hitchcock's version. Our heart bleeds as we see her struggle to cope with being the mistress of the splendour that is Manderly, making false steps at every turn as she is egged on by the nefarious housekeeper, Mrs. Danvers. Its release on Blu-ray brings added sharpness and detail to the black-and-white print as well as clearer audio, as expected, further heightening our enjoyment of an old favorite. I think this is his best movie. Please try again. It was magical and exciting and impressive.
(I DO NOT MEAN REALITY SHOWS which are pre-scripted, stiffly staged and do not employ actors, just contrived shock 'entertainment'.)
I was five years old when this aired in 1962. And why do you think we don't see too many live productions now? This was a big deal! If you like Classic TV, fuzzy pictures, and black and white, you should like this. The digitally re-mastered DVD's video and audio were superb quality. The first thing one notices is that the video engineers retained the movie's natural grain, which is especially prominent during … The era of constant reruns had not yet begun, except in a few cases. This is one of Hitchcock's best films, his first for Hollywood. Examples were The Little Rascals, Amos and Andy, 3 Stooges, and available matinee fare like Frankenstein, the Mummy etc...those were some typical reruns of the time for kids like me.

That being said Alfred Hitchcock's version is wayyyy better I enjoyed that movie so much that I had to read the book.
I, for one, am impressed with the condition considering this comes from 1962, and 1962 TV, to boot. Early live soap operas were proof of that. All customers get FREE Shipping on orders over $25 shipped by Amazon. The pace of the 'teleplay' was rushed and truncated from the original, the acting forced with no real pace and a shockingly lack of chemistry between Mason and Hackett, the 'lovers'. Certainly today, the quality is considered poor, the light and sound below par and the acting a bit less impressive. sad. This is a very good movie.

A Different Era, a Different Standard.
There can be no comparison, even with one of my favorite actors, James Mason, in the lead. This was amazing for a one hour live show from 1962 including commercials. Cleverly built up, with tension being ramped up incrementally, the film involves a beautiful but innocent young wife (wonderfully played by Fontaine) who struggles to accommodate her new life in a huge mansion with her moody husband. Didn't even know it existed until I did a little research after seeing Joan Hackett in a Twilight Zone episode, A Piano in the House, S3, E22.
I ended up 'fast forwarding' through much of this tripe Sad, sad.

The commercials are a hoot with Jinx Falkenburg telling us how modern gas dryers are. Blasting it for leaving out scenes from the movie, when it is less than an hour, in length is ridiculous. The poor reviews left here must be from younger people who expect current production values and those who have watched the 2 hour and 10 minute full-length movie (which I, too, love). It's very short (30+ minutes) and not a particularly engaging story. It's happening to her. $1.99$1.99 to rent. We know this, as well: Rebecca was incomparable, beautiful, sexual and sensual, who wove a net around everyone she knew or crossed. At one time I rejected Hitch as an entertainer, not a true Cinematic great, yet now I see that he produced on several levels and that his most profound vision of love, life and the human psyche is practically unparalleled,as great as Shakespeare or any of the greats of literature.

I think Alfred Hitchcock should definitely have got the Oscar for Best Director for this movie at least. 99. Judith Anderson's role as the chillingly insane Mrs Danvers is one of the best in early film-making. She seems to want to drive the new Mrs deWinter insane with her words -- look at this room, look at the transparent gown for her perfect body, look at her brush -- let me brush your hair -- and then she brushes the terrified bride's hair with sensuous strokes in one of the most erotically charged scenes. While it has his traditional themes of the murder mystery, there is an additional level of psychological realism that is missing in most of his later films, all in a splendidly atmospheric gothic romance, complete with a dark and ruined aristocratic mansion and the stuffy cruelty of the British upper classes and their servants.
